G1 Lust

Dear Internet,

Whenever I want a new toy, I force myself to wait for about two weeks, to research it and make sure it isn’t just a whim.  If I want it consistently while waiting, there’s a good chance that I might actually use it.

That being said …

I think I want the G1: the new Google Android based phone available through T-Mobile.  The monthly cost for a good T-Mobile plan with data seems to cost about what I’m paying Verizon right now.  Also, the launch day applications for it seem to include a bar code price comparison system, as well as a location aware to do list (something to remind me to pick up dry cleaning when I’m near the dry cleaning place).  Both sound awesome.

The downside to the G1 in Saint Louis is that they’re still using the EDGE network here, and nothing 3G.  So, I’ll get data but it may take a while.

Has anyone out there had experience with the G1?  Or with T-Mobile service in Saint Louis?  Or T-Mobile tech support in general?

U-verse

When did AT&T decide that the best way to advertise new product offerings is by going door to door?  Like Mormons do?  It’s really annoying. I know they have my mailing information.  One of these days I’m going to have to learn to recognize the neighbors when looking through my peephole, so I don’t have to answer the door when I know it’s bunk.

Anyway…

Apparently they’re wiring the neighborhood with fiber, and offering package deals for TV, internet, and phone.  This is cool.  However, the subcontractor they sent to tell me all about it didn’t really know the details of the service, or have a clear grasp on all those ‘internet’ terms, or even the hardware they’d need to install.

I don’t think he was deliberately lying to me, but he was pretty confused.  According to him, “a 1.5 Mbps connection can download a whole cd, in like ten seconds.” Nor could he describe how much space/equipment the installation would take, or give me stand alone pricing on internet, without bundled TV.

I only deal with door to door people who can discuss the product they’re trying to sell.  Unfortunately, this means that I am more likely to sign up with the Latter Day Saints than the U-verse guys.
