Projects
December 10th, 2008
Apparently, I am a cranky old dude.
Friends of mine through improv approach me with software / website ideas from time to time, and I never take them up on it. It isn’t because the ideas are good or bad, but because I ask one question: “Would I use this product?” Usually, the answer is no.
Problem is, there are a lot of great IT products out there that I would never use. For example, somewhere, there’s the worlds best crochet pattern website. It probably has a great UI, tons of creative commons patterns, scads of happy users and gobs in ad revenue. I’d find it hard to produce something like it though, because I’m not into that domain of knowledge. My best work is extruded when I care about the outcome, after all.
I can’t tell if I’m foolishly passing up good side projects, or sagely passing up projects that aren’t right for me.

You’re right, the world’s greatest crochet website does exist. It’s http://www.ravelry.com, a sort of Facebook for knitters and crocheters. And it has a very slick AJAX UI.
I use that as proof that everything already exists on the internet. You just have to find it.
